The single most common reason a kurta set comes back to us is not the colour and not the fabric. It is the size. And almost every one of those returns traces back to the same misunderstanding: people order the size they wear in a T-shirt.

Ready garments are cut larger than the body

An Indian ready-garment size is a garment measurement, not a body measurement. When a size chart says L = 42, that means the finished kurta measures 42 inches around the chest. It does not mean it is meant for a 42 inch bust. It is meant for roughly a 40 inch bust, with two inches of ease so the fabric does not pull across the front and so you can raise your arms at a wedding.

So the rule is simple: measure your bust, add two inches, and find the size closest to that number. A 38 inch bust wears a 40 inch garment, which most of our listings call M.

How to measure in thirty seconds

• Wear a fitted top — not a padded jacket, not a loose kurta.
• Run the tape around the fullest part of the bust, level all the way around, snug but not pulled tight.
• Write the number down. That number, plus two, is the size you order from us every time.

If you are between two garment sizes, take the larger. Ethnic wear is more forgiving when it is slightly loose than when it is slightly tight, and a tailor can take in a side seam for a hundred rupees. Nobody can let out a seam that has no fabric in it.

Why some of our sets are numbered instead of lettered

A few pieces — our chikankari kurta and pant set, for instance — are sized 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46. Those numbers are the garment bust in inches, stated directly. We prefer these. Letters vary from one manufacturer to the next; inches do not.

Length is the measurement nobody checks

Bust decides whether it fits. Length decides whether you like it. A kurta cut at 45 to 46 inches, as on our wedding salwar kameez, falls near the ankle on someone 5 feet tall and mid-calf on someone 5 feet 8. Neither is wrong; they are simply different looks. If total length matters to you, write to us before ordering and we will measure the actual piece.

What we cannot do

We do not alter garments. Everything ships as stitched. A local tailor will hem or take in a set faster and better than a courier round trip would, and it costs less than the return postage. We would rather say that plainly than pretend to a service we do not run.

If it still does not fit
